Effective Literacy Website #3 - Jackie Smith

Starfall.com,
Where children have fun learning to read!

One of my favorite literacy supporting websites is http://www.starfall.com/ .  Starfall is a dynamic and engaging website that encourages children to read.  It's main focus is emerging readers.  It also strengthens the reading skills of the students who are on their way of becoming strong readers.  Children love this website because it does not seem like learning at all.  It is learning through play at its best!
This website offers free of cost activites.  If you like to have access to the entire site, then you have to pay a very nominal fee that allows you access throughout the year.  It is surely money well spent.

Starfall teaches children to love reading.  It exposes them to a variety of texts, ranging from poetry, to fiction and non-fiction stories.  If you choose to pay for the subscription, it allows the students access to an online library of books.  Books that are read aloud for students to follow along.

Starfall's collection of books, interactive games, and colorful pictures, keep young children engaged in learning.  They have devised a Kindergarten and First Grade curriculum which are aligned to Common Core Standards.

This website was created by a former struggling reader.  He wanted to help others who struggled like him.  I think he has done an amazing job!
