Reflecting on Book Adventure

Book Adventure, http://www.bookadventure.com/home.aspx , is a free, online resource, created by sponsors and Sylvan Learning Center, which encourages young readers to read more. Book Adventure agrees with leading literacy experts that it’s not enough to teach kids to read; they must choose to read independently if they are to become engaged, lifelong readers. Book Adventure hopes to encourage this with the integration of technology into today’s learning process. Using Book Adventure, readers in grades K-8 not only receive the satisfaction of reading a book from cover to cover, they also earn rewards for taking online quizzes to demonstrate their comprehension of the books they've read. This motivational approach to learning is proven to help build a love of reading that lasts a lifetime!
The site is also very user-friendly. Students create a log in, search for books, read the books and take quizzes. When the students take quizzes, they are able to earn comprehension points and win prizes. Parents and teachers are then able to access these comprehension points from the quizzes in a report. The site is also equipped with many other fun features, such as contest opportunities, the option to create your own booklist or quiz, and fun games and printables.

This site encourages literacy in a fun and interactive way. I think students, teachers and parents will enjoy this site to improve students reading levels, comprehension skills and motivate them to want to read. I would use this in my classroom as a resource for my parents and students. I think my students would enjoy this site and my parents would appreciate all it has to offer. This site is a fun way to have students continuing to practice their reading skills and sharpening their comprehension skills at home.

  1. I think taking a quiz on what a student has read is a great way to see if they really understood what they have read. This is much faster feedback than doing a book report.
