IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Websites #4

ABC Reading Eggs (http://readingeggs.com.au/about/) was created to help and support children read using their online program.   This website offers a lot of activities both online and print to assist children in learning to read.  ABC Reading Eggs offers its program for a fee however parents or teachers may register and access the site for a free trial.
Reading Eggs was developed by team of educational teachers, writers, and developers.  Their reading program concentrates on phonics and sight words.  They use a lot of interactive animations, games, songs, and rewards to motivate and entice young readers.  Additionally, they have lesson plans that go with their program.  Young readers take a diagnostic test when they first start to determine which lesson they will begin on.
I had the opportunity to register and took advantage of their free trial membership.  I had my nephew take their diagnostic test and we explored the website together.   I was amazed at how much stuff they have online.  They had so many games, puzzles, music and songs, as well as story books.  They continue to expand their reading program and members now have the benefit of accessing this program through IPad or Android.

While there are many things to appreciate and benefit from this website, you may need to consider a few things. ABC Reading Eggs originates from Australia and also requires a fee to have full access.  Also, because they have so much to offer to our young readers, it can get overwhelming and confusing.  Nevertheless, it is one website that a parent and teacher can use as an extra support for their young readers.

  1. I share your sentiments on how these resources can be overwheming and even confusing. There is so much available to us that prior to this course, I stuck to what was familiar. Now that I've learned so many new ones, it's a bit hard to keep up.
