Chargualaf IRA Effective Literacy Website #4

NewsELA is a fantastic website for any teacher interested in assigning current events articles to their students.  First of all, the site is FREE, and articles are updated every week.   As you register for an account, and create a class or so, articles can be viewed online, or printed out for use.  Not only do they provide FREE articles for teachers to choose from, but each article can be viewed according to Lexile score.  This makes comprehension for the younger students easier.  Even the titles change as the Lexile scores change, take a look below at the same article, but notice how the title becomes easier to understand as the lexile score lowers.
Articles featured are categorized by subjects: War and Peace, Money, Kids, Science and Law and some may also come with quiz to go along with them.  Not all articles have the option of a comprehension quiz, but as a teacher assigns an article to a class, students may have the option of completing a quiz, depending on the article assigned, and teachers can view students comprehension of the article.
NewsELA is a tool to assist students in the preparation for college.  It will challenge students to read and comprehend an article about current events that are going on in the world around them and it will help them to think critically with the quizzes they are given.

Overall, NewsELA is a site that will ease the work a teacher has to complete when it comes to finding appropriate articles for their students to read.
