Vocabulary Spelling City, here we come!

Vocabulary Spelling City http://www.spellingcity.com/ is a game-based learning tool for vocabulary, spelling, writing and language arts. This site is full of many different ways to practice vocabulary and spelling words. The site is user-friendly and inviting. It offers several free features and a set of premium activities which you have to pay for a minimal fee. The site offers access via mobile app for your tablet and smart phone, or online via computer and interactive whiteboard.

To get started you simply add the words from your vocabulary or spelling list. The site gives you the option to do several things with your list. You can have the site teach you the words. This ‘Teach Me’ feature is audible and interactive. The feature will read you the word, spell the word for you and give you a sentence using that word, read by a recording of a real person. Along with the ‘Teach Me’ feature are the options to play a list of games, the opportunity to practice writing the words with printable worksheets and an interactive spelling test. The site also offers a parent letter inviting students to practice their words at home, ready to print.

The site has a featured spelling and vocabulary list which host an array of literacy skills to focus on such as, multiple meanings, dolch sight words, homophones, science vocabulary, analogies, and many more. This site really takes learning vocabulary and spelling words to another level, making it both fun and interactive.

Teachers have the option to choose from existing word lists or create their own lists for use in the literacy-building exercises. Teachers can use this site in a number of ways, including vocabulary development , student progress tracking, writing practice, Differentiated Instruction, for teaching resources, share with other teachers via the free forum, school and district-level reports, and correlation to State Standards and Common Core. There is also a free training for teachers on how to use the site effectively.

Vocabulary Spelling City Games engage and motivate students to practice their words. There are fun sound effects which add interest and encouragement. The words and sentences are spoken in a natural voice, aiding pronunciation. Students can access the site from anywhere via the mobile app.
This site is very fun and easy to use. I would consider implementing this site with my students to take home for homework and practice or to use at a learning center in my classroom to reinforce vocabulary and spelling words. With the many options the site has to offer to practice the vocabulary and spelling words, students are sure to pass the test!

  1. I really like this website. I want to use it with my son who is in the fourth grade. He loves to read but is not a great speller just like me. I think this will help him. Thanks for sharing.
